China’s universities remain at the front of the race with the gap to other regions remaining largely static.
Tsinghua University is at the top of the leaderboard for another year, with mainland China accounting for five of the top ten institutions and 20 of the top 50 – identical to last year’s figures.
China’s rise across global and regional rankings is a result of significant investment in research and universities made by its government – with research performance being particularly linked to government funding. With such an elevated level of investment, it may be that other countries will find it difficult to catch up.
Within the top ten universities, there has been little change since 2025. Singapore’s National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University remained in third and joint fourth place respectively, while the University of Tokyo climbed to joint fourth, up from fifth.
East Asia universities
Although many universities in Japan and South Korea recorded small improvements in their overall scores, they have fallen in the rankings, their data suggesting a decline when compared to global trends.
In Japan, there are highlights, however. The University of Tokyo reached its highest position since 2015, and the newly merged Institute of Science Tokyo enters the rankings at 34th place.
In contrast, Hong Kong has strengthened its position, with all six of its ranked institutions remaining in the top 50 and Hong Kong Baptist University climbing from 50th to 40th.
Malaysia making a splash
A development to note is Malaysia’s emergence as a real force in regional higher education. Universiti Teknologi Petronas jumped to joint 35th place, up from joint 43rd – and Malaysia’s average institutional score increase is well above the global median.
Experts attribute this progress to a more strategic national approach, with private universities in particular taking rankings performance seriously.
Overall, these 2026 results reveal dominance by Chinese institutions with a more competitive landscape underneath.
