Nineteen new Technical Excellence Colleges will focus on technical skills to drive the UK forward.
The UK Government has announced 19 new Technical Excellence Colleges will be set up. They will equip around 65,000 learners with the skills needed for high-skilled technical jobs.
Boosting the economy
These colleges are part of a wider industrial strategy push to strengthen the country’s workers in sectors that matter most to the economy, such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, defence, digital and technologies.
By giving young people access to specialist training, comprehensive courses and state-of-the-art equipment, the colleges will help them transition from education into work.
Meeting demand
This announcement is intended to help the country meet the future scale of demand for technical skills. The government estimates that nearly 600,000 additional workers will be needed by 2030 across these key sectors. That means having the people with the right skills to fill them and align more closely with employer needs.
The full list of locations has not yet been announced but are understood to be in places to match local industry demand and support regional growth. If this is the case, it will mean that learners should be able to access specialist training closer to home, while local employers will benefit from a stronger local pool of candidates for jobs.
Technical education is critical
Technical education has often been treated as secondary to academia, but the reality is that the skills are just as valid – in some cases, more so. The government is explicitly trying to change this by making technical routes as valued as university, creating clearer routes into work, supporting higher-level learning by age 25 and opening up opportunities for young people from all backgrounds.
The first wave of Technical Excellence Colleges which was announced in 2025, has already started improving facilities, teaching and employer partnerships. This new wave will build on that foundation to create a workforce that fits the future.
