Observed annually during February, this special month celebrates the past achievements of LGBT people in all areas of life.
What is LGBT History Month?
Histories of LGBT people across the UK, Australia, Canada, Cuba, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy and the United States are celebrated each February with events to raise awareness and combat prejudice.
It’s been a firm fixture of the national UK calendar since 2005, when it was established by charity Schools OUT UK.
2025 theme
This year’s theme is Activism and Social Change. The charity has chosen five historical LGBT figures to celebrate, highlighting the significant contributions they have made to create social change in different areas of life, such as housing, the environment, heritage preservation and more.
Resources for schools
To help schools incorporate LGBT history into teaching and learning, The Proud Trust has compiled a free downloadable pack of lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations, written in line with the National Curriculum.
In addition, Schools OUT is running a month-long poetry competition, encouraging contributions from students in key stages 2 to 5 on the theme of activism and social change. It’s free to enter and there’s a £100 Love to Shop voucher to be won!
