6 Top tips for podcasting
- Choose a topic you are passionate about – There really are podcasts on each and every topic from true crime to cats, so there is something for everyone. The important thing is to choose something you will be motivated to share on regularly!
- Share regularly – whether it’s weekly, fortnightly or monthly create a set date/time when you will share episodes so listeners know when to expect the next episode drop. If there will be an irregular gap, where possible, let your listeners know so they don’t unsubscribe assuming that you’ve stopped the podcast. For example, in the episode before the gap, “Hey all, just giving you a heads up the next episode won’t be out until X because I’ll be abroad for a few weeks. But I can’t wait to share a bit about my adventures, when I’m back.’
- Research and credit – Depending on your content you may need to do some research from time to time to ensure you are giving your audience accurate information. It’s important where you use research or inspiration/ideas from others that you credit appropriately. If these references are too long winded in the episode you can put them in your show notes/episode description and say in the episode ‘sources for this episode are in the episode description’.
- Engage with your audience – This is where social media comes in handy! Using the platform of your choice, share what content you have coming up and ask your followers what they think about different episodes and respond to their feedback. You could also ask them for ideas for new episodes and even talk about some of their comments on the podcast too to let them know you value their voices. This may seem a bit daunting but it can be really valuable for growing your audience and maintaining subscribers. Do keep an eye on these channels though and moderate as needed!
- Connect with podcasters – Talk to other podcasters on social media and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Remember to be kind, it’s a two way street, – show their podcast some love by sharing it with your followers or giving some nice feedback, and they might just do the same for you.
- Keep it simple – You don’t need tons of expensive equipment or to rent out a studio to get started. Really you just need a few basics: a microphone- it doesn’t need to be pricey and you could even use your phone/laptop mic; headphones – these will make listening to and editing your episodes much easier; a recording tool – Anchor.fm will let you record and share your podcast on Spotify or you can also use tools like Audacity (for Windows) and Garageband (for Mac) to record and edit your audio files.; podcast platform – Anchor.fm, Podbean, Buzzsprout and many more are out there for you to choose from.
Mark Anderson has hosted many podcasts, and in R.I.S.E. Issue 4 he shared the article, ‘Getting started with your own podcast’ where he gave his advice on various aspects of podcasting from equipment to platforms.
