A day to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Each year on 11 February, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is marked across the world. It’s a day to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), while also recognising the barriers that still prevent many from being fully involved in these subjects.

Women’s contributions

From climate research and medical breakthroughs to AI and space exploration, women have shaped some of the most important scientific advances. But despite this progress, they are still under-represented across many STEM disciplines, particularly in senior roles and in areas such as engineering, physics and computing.

The reasons often include persistent stereotyping, lack of visible role models, limited access to resources – and then, on reaching the workplace, finding cultures that are not always inclusive.

The United Nations publishes some sobering statistics about women’s involvement in STEM on its website, including the fact that, “In cutting edge fields such as artificial intelligence, only one in five professionals (22%) is a woman.” Read the others here.

Education is key

Encouraging more girls into science is better for society – full stop. We know that diverse teams consistently produce more innovative solutions. We also know that different perspectives prompt creative thinking and research that reflects more people’s needs. Win-win, right?

When girls see women involved in space technology, developing vaccines, leading green energy initiatives or applying cutting-edge healthcare technology, it’s just so powerful. Imagining themselves in these positions and doing similar work can influence what subjects they choose at school and motivate them to achieve their goals.

Practical steps for schools

Hearing directly from guest industry speakers is a fabulous way to bring reality to STEM pathways for female students and show that they can do it, too. Schools can consider forming closer ties with local STEM universities, colleges or businesses, perhaps even setting up a mentorship programme to connect female students with women working directly in these sectors who can offer guidance and encouragement. In lessons, considered inclusion of the work of women scientists, along with relevant books to read or podcasts to listen to are great starting points. Additionally, gender equality in STEM is a great topic for a class debate.

Whatever your school chooses to do to elevate and highlight the involvement of women and girls in STEM is a positive step. And if it extends past this designated day, so much the better!
