Learn how we can all #AccelerateAction this International Women’s Day.
International Women’s Day (IWD) takes place annually on the 8th March. It is dedicated to raising awareness of and tackling the issues impacting women. For over 100 years, this inclusive day that celebrates women has continued to call for collective action for gender equality. 1
Each year has a different theme focused on how we can tackle the key issues facing women. This year’s campaign is ‘Accelerate action’. As IWD’s campaign introduction explains,
“At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum. Focusing on the need to ‘Accelerate Action’ emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres. So, together, let’s Accelerate Action to speed up the rate of progress worldwide.” 2
How can you accelerate action in school?
There are lots of ways schools can recognise IWD and help with its gender equality mission.
Here are five to get you started:
- Call out stereotypes and discrimination – challenge misconceptions in the classroom.
- Showcase role models – demonstrate how different careers and opportunities should be open to everyone.
- Provide quality RSE and PSHE education – this fundamental education helps women and girls make informed decisions about their health, helps them understand healthy relationships, etc.
- Celebrate success – recognise the talents and achievements of women and girls and encourage this positive culture.
- Learn about women’s history – ensure pupils have access to an informed curriculum that takes notice of women’s achievements and challenges throughout history.
