Investment in PE and school sport in England

The Government has announced a new investment in PE and sport for schools in England.

The Government’s £1 billion commitment to sport in schools aims to increase young people’s activity levels, keep them healthy and create healthy habits for later life. It’s a welcome announcement for schools to help them to give every child access to quality sports and physical activities.

Significant investment

A new PE and School Sport Partnerships Network, backed by £580 million and due to be fully operational from Spring 2027 will replace the current PE and Sport Premium model, which has long given flexibility to schools but has also led to wide variations in provision.

The new approach is intended to bring national sporting expertise into primary and secondary schools. To make this possible, the Department for Education says:

“£200 million will go towards improving school sporting facilities, which could be used to make facilities more accessible for children with SEND or additional equipment, alongside a one-off £100 million PE Premium payment to support primary schools during the transition year.”

Habits for life

Currently, less than half of young people achieve the recommended 60 minutes of activity a day, and obesity levels are a concern.

The Government’s press release suggests schools may be able to access more tailored help for disadvantaged pupils, girls, children with SEND and those currently least likely to meet daily activity targets. This support could include expert coaching, additional swimming opportunities and improved extra-curricular activities.

This investment demonstrates that the Government is positioning PE and school sport at the centre of child development. If this new model succeeds in getting more young people engaged in sport and increase their activity levels, it could help more pupils develop healthy habits, stronger confidence and a more positive relationship with physical activity for life.
