The Kazakhstan government plans to start trialling AI in some of its secondary schools from September.
It will begin pilot work in ten minimally equipped rural schools before expanding to 50 more schools – and then to 440 more by January 2027. In total, the programme aims to reach 500 schools out of more than 8,000 nationwide.
Supporting teachers
For teachers, the most important message is that AI is being framed as a tool to support to their work.
Standards for school use are due by September 2026, alongside a separate plan for ongoing professional development, so that staff understand how to use AI well and safely with their students.
The initial pilot will test AI-supported tools in fourth-grade classes for Kazakh language, mathematics and digital literacy. If these trials go well, then they will be extended to other schools.
Supporting schools
Kazakh authorities say that the plan is for schools to focus on teaching students how to work with AI, to evaluate it critically and question its outputs.
The ministry also said that, before the trial commences, it is setting out strict rules for storing and processing children’s personal data. It will also draft standards for AI use in schools, alongside academic honesty requirements.
Education leaders see the introduction of AI in schools as part of a plan to create a skilled future workforce that can help the country move towards a knowledge-based economy in the future.
