The Government of Malta is planning a ‘transformative national commitment to place educators’ wellbeing at the heart of Malta’s education system’.
In March 2026, the Maltese Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR) has shared its new Educator Wellbeing Strategy 2026-2030, which sets out its vision for educator wellbeing and proposed initiatives. A public consultation asking for feedback on the draft strategy is open until 30th April.
About the strategy
MEYR believes that educator wellbeing is essential to quality teaching. They want to help make it a priority by providing a foundation ‘for an education workforce that thrives personally and professionally while contributing to improved learner outcomes and stronger school communities’. It builds on Malta’s 2024-2030 National Education Strategy: Visioning the Future by Transforming Education, which highlighted educator wellbeing as critical to sustainable progress and meaningful lasting change in education.
MEYR’s vision for educator wellbeing encompasses:
- a culture of wellbeing integrated into every aspect of the educational system
- educators who are empowered, resilient and fulfilled in both their personal and professional lives
- school communities that actively support and prioritise educator wellbeing
- continuous improvement in teaching practices and student outcomes because of enhanced educator wellbeing
- recognition of educator wellbeing as a critical factor in attracting and retaining top talent in the field
- a comprehensive support network that addresses all eight areas of the Wellness Wheel for educators
- innovative research driving the development of wellbeing initiatives
- personalised wellbeing journeys for educators, supported by tailored resources and programmes
- strong leadership commitment to educator wellbeing at all levels of the educational system
- a measurable positive impact on overall wellbeing and vitality of educational institutions and the broader community.
Foundational pillars
The strategy is built on three pillars.
Pillar 1, ‘Outreach & engagement’, includes initiatives such as setting up a ‘Educator Voice and Social committee’, organising an annual ‘Educator Appreciation Event’ and developing and distributing a range of self-care resources such as journals and calendars.
Pillar 2, ‘Personal & Professional Growth’, has initiatives such as implementing the CARE (Cultivating Awareness and Resilience in Educators) programme, working with a foundation to provide educators with youth mental health first aid training and a rotating two-year cycle of nationwide personal and professional growth workshop opportunities.
Pillar 3, ‘Support & Empowerment’, includes initiatives such as introducing a peer mentoring programme, first-line assistance for college networks from the Wellbeing Unit and providing legal aid to educators following school related incidents, including attacks on social media.
The strategy is a significant step forward in supporting educators to have a strong sense of belonging in their communities and feel valued for not just what they do but who they are as individuals.
