University campuses from universities in the UK, Kazakhstan and South Korea are set to be established in the country.
Four British universities (University of London, Brunel University, University of Gloucestershire and University of Leicester) and institutions from Kazakhstan and South Korea have plans to set up campuses in the Punjab region, in Knowledge City, Lahore.
HE reforms
The initiative forms part of Punjab’s higher education reforms. Alongside bringing international institutions into the area, its 2025-2029 plan aims to help local universities become more globally competitive by modernising courses and expanding research capacities. It is hoped that the presence of foreign campuses nearby will help local universities to raise their standards to the same levels.
These developments could be of real benefit Pakistani HE students. The vice-chancellor of the University of Punjab suggested the initiative would enable students to receive foreign-quality education domestically, which would reduce the substantial costs of studying abroad and potentially slow the brain drain from the country.
A better future for Pakistani students
Past attempts to bring foreign universities to Pakistan have stalled due to funding and changes in the political landscape, meaning that they failed to materialise.
However, if successful this time, Punjab’s ambitious plan could bring quality international education to local students and, at the same time, designate Punjab as a leading regional centre for higher education.
