Teacher recruitment and salaries are always hot topics – and not just in the UK.
While it may seem that teacher shortages are a local issue, the reality is that it’s one that occurs in many EU countries.
Euronews has been looking at trends in these areas, publishing its findings in an article on 27th January.
What does the salary data tell us?
Using data from the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and the OECD’s Education at a Glance 2024 report, the article sets out where teachers are paid the most and least – and includes interactive graphs to illustrate the changes over time.
There are stark differences, even between countries like the EU powerhouses of France and Germany, where teachers in Germany earn almost twice as much as those in France. There’s also a long way to go for teachers in EU candidate countries, who learn less than €12,000 per year.
Even teachers with good qualifications and experience sometimes cannot earn enough to make teaching a viable proposition in some countries, risking the future of education for so many young people in the region.
