The Century of Türkiye Education Model is a new holistic, skills-based framework for all levels of education in Türkiye.
A comprehensive curriculum reform has been introduced for in Türkiye which goes from pre-primary to upper secondary education.
The Century of Türkiye Education Model ‘s slogan is ‘Froom roots to the future’. The Ministry of National Education of The Republic of Türkiye explains this as, “Education is a whole with many components. One leg of education is rooted in the past, while the other is a gateway opening horizons to the future.”
The curriculum has a holistic, student-centred and skills-based focus where it wants students to gain knowledge and develop values. The curriculum aims to give students good soci0-emotional and cross-curricular learning, providing opportunities to apply their skills and knowledge in different ways; participate in social activities; and develop their critical thinking, responsibility, creativity and civic awareness. ‘Systems thinking’ is another area of focus where students develop their digital, data, financial and information literacy and learn about sustainability and cultural awareness.
The curriculum has four building blocks: understanding human nature, approaching knowledge, structuring learning over time and developing values. It also has ten core traits it wants to help every student embody – being moral, wise, courageous, aesthetically aware, strong-willed, compassionate, healthy, inquisitive, productive and patriotic.
The curriculum framework also:
- emphasises flexible, inclusive teaching – encouraging teachers to adapt lessons through flexible grouping, enrichment and targeted support to meet diverse needs
- requires schools to give teachers dedicated planning time for local projects, investigations and social activities linked to their local community
- links knowledge with skills in its ‘learning outcomes’ for more secure understanding and application
- has a specific skills framework that is broken down into conceptual, subject-specific, literacy and social-emotional skills – alongside the application of these skills
- is structured to develop higher-order thinking
- has a Virtue-Value-Framework that ‘ties values like respect, responsibility and justice to real actions’.
- uses social-emotional learning opportunities to build self-awareness, emotional control, empathy and positive relationships
- encourages schools to provide extra curricular activities to further support students’ mental, social, physical and moral growth – and to apply skills in real life contexts
- uses assessment that focuses on continuous, formative feedback
- uses a mixture of pre-assessment (to check readiness), formative assessment (to monitor ongoing progress), summative assessment (to check outcomes).
