The new rankings for world universities by subject have been released.
Higher education analyst, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), ranks 1,758 unique institutions in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025 list, an increase of 7% on the 2024 edition.
It also looks at 55 subjects across five broad topic areas:
- arts and humanities
- engineering and technology
- life sciences and medicine
- natural sciences
- social sciences and management.
Rankings such as these measure and analyse university and business school performance across metrics that are important to students, governments and potential partners – enabling them to understand how institutions operate and to make informed choices.
Emerging subject trends
Interesting findings include that as the US, UK, New Zealand and the Netherlands have closed many arts and humanities courses, flagship universities in China, Singapore and Japan have all improved their offerings in these areas. This is also a trend seen in other areas, such as natural sciences.
